McLaren Dashboard Warning Lights Explained

A plain-language explanation of the most common McLaren dashboard warning lights and what they generally mean, based on published warning-light guides and owner manuals.

Frequently asked questions

What does the check engine / EPC light mean on a McLaren?

It illuminates briefly on ignition as a bulb check and should turn off once the engine starts. If it stays on, or comes on while driving, the car may enter a reduced-power "limp home" mode to protect itself — it needs a proper diagnostic scan rather than just being cleared and ignored.

What about the airbag (SRS) warning light?

Like the check engine light, it does a bulb-check on startup and switches off once the engine is running. If it illuminates again while driving, that indicates an actual fault in the airbag/SRS system and should be checked before the car is driven further.

What does the ABS/ESC warning light mean?

It follows the same bulb-check pattern on startup. If it stays lit, or comes on while driving, there's a fault in the ABS or stability control system affecting braking or traction assistance, and it should be diagnosed promptly rather than left.

Is a flashing traction control light a problem?

Not necessarily — it flashes when the system is actively intervening, for example on a slippery surface, which is normal operation. It's only a sign of a fault if it stays illuminated continuously alongside a dashboard warning message.
